PERISHABLES

A fruit bowl displays fruit as a decoration, communicating freshly picked as if from the nearest tree. The fruit's life between the farm and home isn't visually present. Things like modes of distribution, business, wasted packaging are represented in the decoration form and function of this fruit bowl.

A food delivery truck delivers produce to a market 30 minutes away. The decals on this truck have been partially removed. Once displaying stock photo imagery of fresh produce, their silhouette is only left. These stickers only leave a trace of their use and often resemble bin bags or wrapped pallets.

The decal forms were extracted from the delivery van and are placed as stickers on the bowl.

When the food is bought and sold in the market the waste packaging is haphazardly left once the market is over. By 7 o'clock this waste is usually completely gone from the market street. There is a brief hour where this waste is displayed and becomes a temporary representation of the market's byproduct. This temporary change in the street's environment is a brief display of how the environment is being changed by production although we remove this from display.

The bowl's form is a decimated mesh from a 3D scan of one of the piles of rubbish left after the market. The mesh is decimated to have the lowest amount of polygons so as to allow it to be produced in stainless steel with a reasonable amount of faces for manufacture as well as mirroring the deterioration of the waste itself.

The form created causes the fruit to be precariously balanced referencing the unstable employment of the current modes of distribution and waste currently used. Some fruit may fall onto the floor needing to be discarded.

When fruit arrives it often has no trace of business attached except for a branded sticker which allows us to see the provider. These are the only stamp of the business relationship these natural objects have. This is reflected in the stickers on the bowl.
